How do I add captions to my YouTube video?
You will learn several ways on how to create captions for your YouTube videos.
Getting to the Youtube Caption Editor
Go to your Video Manager for the video you want to add Captions to and go to the Subtitles/CC tab. Then click the blue "Add new subtitles or CC" button and select the language of the captions you are adding.
There are three different options for creating captions for your video
- Upload a file: This allows you to upload a text file you have straight into YouTube either as a transcript or subtitle file.
- Transcribe and Auto-sync: This allows you to type your captions alongside the video, which will then be automatically synced up with your voice in the video.
- Create new Subtitles or CC: This creates blank captions in your video that you can fill in, move around, and set the timings for.
Only certain file types are allowed to be used for Transcripts and Subtitles. It's reccommended you use a .txt file for the transcript. Subtitle files need to be created in a very specific way to be uploaded. For a full list of supported file types, head here: Supported subtitle and closed caption file types.
1. Click Choose File, find the transcript file you wish to use, and click Upload. This will then put your transcript into the Transcribe and Auto-Sync page.

2. With your transcript now in the text box, click the blue Set Timings button to automatically sync up with the video. This may take a few moments.
3. Click on the draft to view your captions and their timings. If they are still setting the timings, wait a few minutes and try again.
4. Your captions should now be synced up with your voice in the video. You can add more or edit the timings for captions on this screen. When you are done, make sure to hit the Save Changes button.
1. Type in what is being said in the video into the text box. By default, the video will pause while you type, but you don't need to line up the script with the video. When done, click Set Timings. It may take several moments for them to sync up.
2. Your captions should now be synced up with your voice in the video. You can add more or edit the timings for captions on this screen. When you are done, make sure to hit the Save Changes button.
