Instructors | Edit closed captioning of VoiceThread videos
Instructors will learn how to edit closed captioning of their VoiceThread videos within Canvas. This guide will assume that you are creating a new VoiceThread in your Canvas course. You can also add closed captioning to an existing VoiceThread within your Canvas course.
Instructors, please review this Content Facilitation HSU website for creating and requesting videos with captions. This PDF provides additional resources for creating and captioning your own videos.
1. Add a new VoiceThread
Need help? These Canvas Guides provides additional information for creating an assignment and creating an assignment using an external tool.
2. Find and select the VoiceThread assignment
Navigate to the Course Navigation menu and click the Assignments tab.

Your VoiceThread assignment will have a unique title that you created. For the purposes of this tutorial, the VoiceThread assignment is titled "VoiceThread Assignment view."

4. Play the VoiceThread video
Click on the link for your VoiceThread video.

5. Edit auto generated captions
Hover over the square on the left hand side that corresponds to the part that you would like to edit the captions for, and click the CC button on the top right of the box that pops out. Depending on the length of the segment, it might take VoiceThread up to 10 minutes to create auto generated captions that you can edit.
Once you have clicked the CC button, click the box that says "Edit Captions." If you do not see this box, wait a few minutes and press the refresh button at the top of the page - VoiceThread is still generating the captions for you.

This will bring up the Captions Editor, with which you can edit any mistakes made by the machine that made your captions.
Once you are done editing captions, click the "Save Captions" button and your changes will be saved.
